Reimbursement

Medicare Geographic Reclassification

Webinar

Medicare reimbursement rates are partially based on Medicare published wage indexes. To ensure reimbursement mirrors a hospitals labor market, hospitals can file a Medicare Geographic Reclassification Application. If the hospital qualifies and the application is approved by the Medicare Geographic Reclassification Review Board, the hospital will be assigned a different Core Based Statistical Area for purposes of the hospital assigned wage index. The overall process is to ensure hospitals reimbursement is reflective of its actual labor costs. Qualifying for geographic relocation can result in millions of dollars in additional Medicare reimbursements.

This course, presented as part of the Healthcare Providers Reimbursement series, will discuss the qualifying criteria for filing a Medicare Geographic Reclassification Application, data required to complete the application, alternative qualification criteria and other nuances to qualifying for geographic relocation to a Core Based Statistical Area. Attendees will also receive sample forms to complete. Applications are due to the Medicare Geographic Review Board on September 1, 2023, with no exceptions.

We recommend hospitals review for qualification in conjunction with publication of the annual Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System proposed rule on or approximately 2 weeks before May 1st, 2023. This allows for additional financial planning and helps ensure timely filing of the application when the Inpatient PPS final rule is published on August 1, 2023.
