For the first time in more than three decades, obstetric coding is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul. Driven by changes in maternity care delivery and the growing need for more meaningful data to improve maternal health outcomes, the American Medical Association (AMA) has completely restructured the CPT Maternity Services section. These sweeping changes will affect how obstetric services are documented, coded, and reported, making it essential for coding professionals, providers, and healthcare organizations to prepare now.

The new CPT codes will take effect January 1, 2027, however the changes will impact coding and billing workflows beginning in 2026. The design for the new codes will create a shift in reimbursement and timing of cashflow since the historical global billing concept will be eliminated. With the new codes, obstetrical codes reimbursement will be aligned with provider’s services throughout the pregnancy and delivery.
